Nicola and I began our journey into mainstream and special education very early in our lives. We both knew children with SEN and their families as we were growing up. Something in those formative years must have piqued our interest and Nicola in her early 20's and I in my late teens embarked on a career working with children .
Fast forward 25 years later and we are still continuing our journey. Although now we have a combined 50 years experience behind us. In that time we have had many roles from class teachers to Head of Departments to Deputy Headship (you can check out our profiles to discover more on our roles).
Over that period we have gained many skills and approaches that inform our practice. We do not advocate one style or approach because all children are different. What works for one child with Autism may not work for another! And so on.
It is with this in mind that we decided to start our own tutoring company, designed specifically for children in special education and those in primary. It is our belief that we can build upon the excellent work done in schools by our teaching colleagues and enable children to make even more progress. From our experience 1:1 or small group work can considerably enhance the overall learning outcomes and EHCP targets.
Our philosophy is 'one size does not fit all', especially for children with special needs. We are all individuals with different likes and dislikes and this is no different from the learning environment. As private tutors we will find and then use the children's own interests to inform our teaching. We pride ourselves on our 'outside the box' ideas and teaching styles.
Fundamental Philosophies:
We chose our name because we at Sky Rocket SEN Tutoring believe all children, no matter their background or their special needs have the same right to aspirations as any other child. We put no limits on what they can achieve and want to help them 'Reach for the Stars'.
Our ethos as private tutors:
"We have no limits to our world, We are only limited by our imagination" (Bob Ross).
My career has been dedicated to improving the lives of children with and without special educational needs and disabilities.
For the past 16 years, I have taught children with a range of special educational needs, predominantly within special school settings. My experience encompasses many roles and responsibilities, which include Deputy Head of an Outstanding Special School, Communication and Language Intervention Lead, Autism Accreditation Lead (The National Autistic Society) and Behaviour Support Tutor.
Always keen to challenge myself for the interest of the children I teach, I gained a 1st Class Masters in Education, with a specialism in language and communication. My experience and expertise in teaching children and young people with SEND allows me to take my lead from the child and adapt my tutoring to reflect their unique learning styles and interests. I can help your child to reach their potential and soar beyond it .... through play, drama, outdoor education, structured teaching techniques - underpinned by my skills, experience in specialist strategies, my ability to make a connection and above of all my desire to make learning opportunities meaningful and engaging for your child.
I have been working in schools and education for over 25 years. I have worked with all age groups from 2 to 19 years of age.
I achieved a 2:1 honours degree in Learning and Teaching with my dissertation on The impact of Mobility Opportunities Via Education on Non-ambulant Children earning me significant recognition. I have subsequently enhanced my knowledge and understanding of education by completing specialist courses on TEACCH, SCERTS, Makaton, CPA Maths and phonics approaches to name a few. I am also NPQML accredited.
My roles have included:
A number of years ago I decided to further improve my skills as a teacher and embarked on an exciting journey to teach in the USA. I found a wonderful school in Atlanta, Georgia where I was able to gain greater insight into teaching techniques and understanding.
The overriding conclusion to all my travels and experience is that children do not learn anything if they are not having fun.
